Are you passionate about chess and skilled at inspiring young minds? We are seeking a dedicated Chess Teacher to lead instruction and competitive chess programs for K-12 students in New York City. In this role, you’ll foster critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and strategic reasoning while developing students’ love of the game.
This position is ideal for experienced chess players, coaches, or educators who want to combine their expertise with a meaningful teaching experience that impacts students’ academic and personal growth.
Role Overview
As a Chess Instructor, you will create a structured and engaging learning environment where students progress from foundational chess skills to advanced strategies and competitive play. You will guide students through tactical exercises, game analysis, and tournament preparation while building confidence and teamwork.
Key Responsibilities
Instruction & Curriculum Development
- Teach a comprehensive chess curriculum that covers fundamentals, tactics, strategy, and advanced concepts.
- Build students’ critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical reasoning through structured lessons and exercises.
- Tailor instruction to varying skill levels and learning styles.
Competitive Coaching & Tournament Support
- Coach high-performing student teams for city, state, and national chess tournaments.
- Lead practice sessions and provide individualized guidance to advance student performance.
- Attend and support competitive events, including at least 12 Saturdays per school year.
Student Engagement & Community Involvement
- Foster a classroom culture where students develop a love for chess and intellectual curiosity.
- Organize family chess nights, internal tournaments, and other events to engage the broader school community.
- Encourage collaboration, sportsmanship, and leadership among students.
Professional Development & Collaboration
- Participate in ongoing professional development and coaching sessions.
- Collaborate with other Chess Teachers and school leadership to refine curriculum and instructional approaches.
Qualifications
- Strong knowledge of chess, including advanced strategies and tournament-level experience.
- Teaching or coaching experience in chess or similar educational programs.
- Demonstrated ability to inspire students and enhance their understanding of chess.
- Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
- Experience working with children in academic, extracurricular, or coaching settings.
- A 2-year or 4-year degree is a plus but not required.

Compensation
Salary Range: $65,000 USD (may vary based on experience and qualifications)
