Position Information

$68,640 - $114,660

 

The base salary range represents a good faith salary range for this position. This position is eligible for annual incentive pay and has the opportunity for continued salary growth. If you are hired at American Water your base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as market, geography, skills, education and/or experience. Primary Role

Member of the regulatory tax department:  The regulatory tax department supports results of the tax reporting and compliance team in the regulatory affairs of the company in order to meet the overall financial strategies and objectives of the company. The regulatory tax department integrates tax strategies into rate mechanisms, provides expert witness testimony with regulatory proceedings, and is responsible for the calculations that support plant related accumulated deferred income taxes and excess deferred income taxes and amortization.

 

This role is responsible for the preparation of income tax specific sections and exhibits of rate cases and other regulatory filings, the identification and implementation of key tax savings and/or process improvements, and

providing support for income tax matters of the business including tax reconciliations, compliance and audits. 

Key Accountabilities

  • Provide rate case support, and accounting considerations, as applicable, to a regulated company and its subsidiaries (excluding payroll taxes).
  • Prepare the data requests related to rate cases and rate filings.
  • Conduct research and interpret tax law for review by tax managers and directors.
  • Support the tax accounting considerations and rate-making implications related to merger and acquisitions, and/or other business initiatives with a primary focus on the regulatory impacts.
  • Assisting with tax compliance and tax accounting, most frequently with tax fixed asset calculations, and other special projects and assigned tasks.
  • Recommend and help implement changes to tax department processes to standardize procedures and increase tax efficiencies. Have the ability to solve complex and diverse problems that require tax specific skills and job knowledge to determine best course of action.
  • Establish relationships with key internal and external groups, including finance, accounting, rates and operational personnel. Serve as a subject matter expert to colleagues. Contribute to measurable team and/or organizational objectives.

Knowledge/Skills

  • Ability to manage competing priorities and the pressures associated with tax filings and general business demands. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills with proven ability to interact effectively with internal customers, management and external professionals.
  • Ability to effectively work independently.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on initiative, knowledge sharing, team building and decision making.
  • Tax compliance knowledge and experience, especially with accounting for income taxes (ASC 740) and Sarbanes – Oxley requirements.
  • Experience in the utility industry and knowledge of regulatory accounting desired.
  • Experience with tax fixed asset calculations desired.
  • SAP, PowerPlant, Hyperion, SharePoint and Tax software experience desired.

Experience/Education

  • 5 to 7 years’ experience in income tax accounting
  • Requires a bachelor's level degree and work experience that provides the knowledge of and exposure to tax accounting as well as theories, principles and concepts of tax reporting and compliance.
  • CPA is desired. 
  • Public accounting experience is preferred.
