Office of Indiana State Comptroller:
The State Comptroller’s office has four main areas — Accounts Payable, Accounting and Reporting, Local Government, and Payroll. Each of these departments plays a crucial role in the functionality of state government. From paying state employees to balancing the state’s checkbook to working with local units and developing year-end financial reports, these departments and the employees within them are dedicated to accurate and transparent accounting on behalf of Hoosiers across the state.
Role Overview:
SUMMARY Incumbent serves as Staff Accountant for the Office of State Comptroller (“Comptroller”), auditing and approving General Ledger transactions for the State of Indiana, performing ledger integrity and reconciliations of the State’s financials data to ensure accurate financial records, assisting with daily deposits, and processing various distributions to local government officials. DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Audit and approve General Ledger journal transactions in accordance with the state’s accounting manual, policies, relevant statutes Complete regular reviews and reconciliations of accounting information in order to ensure accuracy. These include: Other duties may include but are not limited to: JOB REQUIREMENTS AND DIFFICULTY OF WORK PeopleSoft financial experience is preferred State of Indiana work experience is preferred Must be proficient with Microsoft Office products Ability to analyze information provided and review asset entries for accuracy and compliance with guidelines Ability to multi-task, prioritize work, and set and achieve individual goals Exemplary verbal and written communication skills Excellent problem solving skills Ability to understand material such as detailed forms, standard memos, or letters The level of knowledge and ability required includes a full range of generally accepted and commonly used principles, theories, methodology, and precedents Incumbent must possess a practical knowledge of practices, rules, regulations, theories, principles or techniques developed through on-the-job training and extended experience The nature of instructions and guidelines for work is generally accepted but are not always clearly applicable. Judgment is needed in selecting the most pertinent guidelines, in interpreting precedents, and in adapting standard formulas, methods, or procedures to fit facts and conditions. RESPONSIBILITY Purpose and desired results indicated and anticipated unusual problems discussed. Deviations from guidelines must be referred to the supervisor. Case actions or recurring work clearly covered by guidelines may or may not be reviewed. Otherwise, work reviewed for adherence to instructions, soundness of judgment and conclusions, technical adequacy, accuracy and conformance with practice or precedent. Requires application of standardized or accepted practice, usually in connection with individual cases, persons, or situations LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Auditing, or Financial Management/Analysis plus 5 year professional experience or 10 years of relevant professional experience PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS Relationships require explanation or interpretation to render service, carry out policies, or maintain coordination The scope of work contacts includes persons employed by other agencies, or with the public PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT Incumbent works in a standard office environment with no unusual physical demands
Salary Statement:
The salary for this position traditionally starts at 75,000.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.
