Summary of Responsibilities:


The Tax Senior I will normally possess at least one year of related experience with demonstrated proficiency in tax return preparation as well as the interest to interact with clients in a professional manner. They prepare tax returns of up to a moderate level of complexity as well as assisting with portions of larger tax assignments. The Tax Senior I may work on multiple projects simultaneously. In addition, the Tax Senior I must ensure that the firm complies with the tax law on all tax returns prepared as well as maintaining awareness of any new tax legislation. On occasion, they may have direct contact with various clients.

Performance Expectations:

  • Prepares various tax returns of up to a level of moderate complexity (individual, business, nonprofit, trust and estate). 
  • Performs other tax-related tasks as requested such as running depreciation reports, preparing tax projections, mapping general ledger trial balances for tax return purposes, etc.
  • May perform accounting services to adjust client books.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and be able to complete assigned work in an accurate, organized and prompt manner. Completes assigned work within the time allotted from the tax budget.
  • Proficient in the use of tax-related software (tax return software, research software, fixed asset management system, projection software) and assists lower level staff with its utilization when necessary. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Continues to develop awareness of federal and state tax laws and regulations and how they must be applied when preparing tax returns.  
  •  Ensures that partners, tax director, managers and senior staff are kept informed of the status of work in progress as well as all important client developments.
  • Communicates with tax in-charge on a timely basis when issues arise requiring additional expertise, experience or guidance when preparing tax returns.
  • Continues to develop skills with use of tax research/planning software and performs tax research, tax planning and projection assignments as requested by Tax Director/Partners/Managers or as determined in order to meet client needs.  
  • Maintains high professional and ethical standards.

Assignments:


Tax Senior I’s are responsible for preparing tax returns of up to a moderate level of complexity. Duties may also include the following:

  • Works with minimal supervision and identifies issues to discuss with tax in-charge prior to making decisions.
  • Adherence to budget and client/firm deadlines.
  • Performing other tax related duties as requested.

Professional Development: Tax Senior I’s are expected to develop professionally by:

  • Passing the CPA exam or receiving other certification (approved by LPC)
  • Demonstrating ability to interact with clients.
  • Working with management on in-house training programs, including CPE and other presentations.
  • Continuing participation in civic events to project the firm’s image and attract new business.  
  • Learning new technology introduced into the work environment.

 Education, Experience and Skills Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting (with several tax credits preferably) or Master’s degree in accounting/tax. In addition, qualified candidates will have met the 150-hour credit requirement.
  • Either hold a current and valid certified public accountant’s license or be working toward obtaining the license by taking and passing the applicable state CPA exam.
  • Proficient in use of computers and be familiar with tax preparation software (CCH) and tax research software.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in English, verbal and written.
  • Continuing professional education as established by the AICPA and applicable state society, averaging 40 hours annually.
  • If licensed, should be a member in good standing with the AICPA and applicable state society.

Working Conditions

  • Occasional same day travel for meetings at client offices and seminars, using a personal vehicle.
  • Occasional overtime work required throughout the year. Overtime and Saturday work may be required from early February through mid-April and during September-October in order to meet tax deadlines. Additional overtime may be required at other times throughout the year in order to meet client needs.
  • Minimal Safety Hazards. General office working conditions.
